If your home’s water is supplied by a private well, your water softener should always be installed downstream of the pressure tank. We explain a few reasons why in the article below.
- The unit will not receive a steady, adequate water supply, because water will be flowing through it only when the well pump is running.
- During regeneration, water could enter the unit backwards through its valve outlet port leading to the pressure tank.
- Additionally, there is a risk that if the filtration system becomes clogged, it could lead to the well pump short-cycling and potentially burning out.
