Some water softener salts contain additives to help control iron and rust buildup. This article contains our recommendations for using iron-out salt in your Whirlpool water softener.
Iron Out salt can cause premature corrosion of the electronics on your unit. If you choose to use this type of salt, we recommend pouring a bag at the bottom of the softener, and covering that with regular pellet/crystal salt to limit the exposure to the electronics above.
Bleach Sanitation
We do not recommend sanitizing with bleach when using Iron Out salt in the tank. There is evidence of a possible chemical reaction occurring when these mix, which can be detrimental to the unit.
