Some water softener salts have ingredients to help control rust buildup. Keep reading to learn more.
You can find this type of rust-control salt under different names, including "Rust Remover" and "Iron Fighter." While this type of salt is effective at controlling iron and manganese buildup within the water softener's resin bed, over time, fumes from the additives can impact your softener's electronics. If you choose to use this type of salt, we recommend pouring one bag into the bottom of the softener, then covering that with a bag of regular softener salt.
An alternative to rust-control salt?
- We recommend using a bottle of Whirlpool® Water Softener Cleanser every 4 months. Regular use of the cleanser will help to keep your softener's resin and valve clean of rust and mineral deposits.
